The varsity girls basketball team traveled to Marshall on Tuesday night and secured a 50-43 victory over the Redhawks. As always, Marshall was ready to play and gave the Mounties a fight. After a slow start Northwest made a run late in the first quarter, fueled by 8 quick points from Morgan Hanchett. The Mounties lead 15-14 after the first, and amped up the defense in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 29-20 at the break. Mary Crowley provided a great spark on the defensive end of the floor, and all ten Mounties chipped in to help build the lead. Northwest outscored Marshall 13-10 in the third, to open up a 12 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Marshall would make a run midway through the fourth, but it wasnt enough to overcome the deficit, and the Mounties put it away at the free throw line. Layne Sleight put together a solid performance, netting 18 points. sleight knocked down three big three pointers in key moments for the Mounties. Jozie Bontrager added 14 points and a great effort on the defensive end. She also pulled down a number of big rebounds, grabbing 14 on the night. Morgan Hanchett added 9 points and Mallory Anspaugh 3. Brooklynne Bevier, Anya Hedrich and Megan Swartz each scored 2 points. Teja Kapp and Mylie Debacker each provided a spark in their minutes for the Mounties.
The win moves Northwest to 15-4 on the season. The varsity girls will wrap up the regular season on Friday at home against Pennfield. Our five seniors will be honored just prior to the game starting.
